Are you ready to start journaling consistently? You’ll find you don’t need much – pens, paper – and a peaceful place to write! Here are some suggestions to create a peaceful place to journal.
While technically you can write in your journal anywhere, it can be helpful in the beginning to dedicate a small space for that purpose. You will learn to associate being in this location with the activity of writing.
Eventually as your writing habit grows, you may choose other environments. But in the beginning at least, a consistent location can be helpful.
You will want to journal in a calm, relaxing place with as few distractions as possible.

Tips to Create a Peaceful Place to Journal
1. Choose a Quiet Space to Journal
Look for a quiet space.
To best get your thoughts and feelings clearly down onto the paper, you’ll want a quiet space that allows you to focus. This can be a challenge if you have a busy household, so you may need to get creative.
You may choose a chair in your bedroom, your office “after hours”, or even a corner of the basement! You can easily choose to move outside during warmer weather.
To further reduce any disruptive noise, play soft music, turn on a fan, or use a white noise machine.
If there are simply too many distractions in your home, try a coffee shop, wine bar, or park bench. you may find the sounds in these areas less of a distraction since they require no response from you.
2. Make Your Space Comfortable
If you don’t have a comfortable place to sit, you are not going to feel encouraged to spend time journaling.
Choose whatever type of seat feels best to you – an overstuffed armchair, spread out on a couch or bed, or even a cushion on the floor.
Make sure the temperature is comfortable, or add a blanket.
Bring a cup of tea or coffee, and even a snack if you are hungry.
Personalize the area if you like with photos, motivational quotes, or a vision board.
And of course, keep the journaling supplies you need to have gathered together in your space, including journals, papers, and extra pens.
3. Keep Your Journal Space Uncluttered
Wherever you choose to base your journaling space, be sure to eliminate any clutter.
When a space is cluttered, it can cause our minds to become cluttered too. Clutter can be a source of distraction at a time you want to focus on your writing.
Keep your journal space neat, uncluttered, and organized.

4. Add a touch of nature with a green plant
Although your goal is to minimize distractions, one item you will want in your journal space is a green plant.
Adding a plant to the space can create a sense of calm and tranquility. Choose a plant that suits the lighting level of your space. Make it an easy-care plant, such as a philodendron or snake plant, or choose a fragrant lavender or mint.
Plants are known to improve air quality, boosting the oxygen within the space. They can also boost productivity and reduce stress, qualities that make them ideal for a journal writing space.
5. Consider the power of scent
In addition to being the sense most closely linked to memory, smell is also highly emotive.
It makes sense to surround yourself with a fragrance you enjoy while you are writing in your journal.
Think about a scent that helps you to feel calmer, more focused, or uplifted. Then add a candle, room spray, or wax melt to your journal space in a fragrance that matches the mood you wish to achieve.
As suggestions, lavender and vanilla tend to be calming, peppermint is helpful for focus, and citrus scents are uplifting.
